World strikes historic new deal at COP28 to ‘transition away from fossil fuels’

“An unprecedented reference to transitioning away from all fossil fuels to enable the world to reach net zero by 2050” is included in the historic new text agreed in overtime at COP28 in Dubai.

Reacting to ‘The UAE Consensus’ in his closing remarks, COP28 President, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, said: “The world needed to find a new way. By following our North Star, we have found that path. We have worked very hard to secure a better future for our people and our planet. We should be proud of our historic achievement.”

The landmark deal points the world towards this North Star with an ambitious climate agenda designed to keep 1.5°C within reach. Over $85 billion in funding for climate action has been mobilised at COP28 amid a raft of new agreements and targets including a goal to ‘triple renewables and double energy efficiency by 2030’.
