A new sustainable smart city being built in Qatar – where people can enjoy a sustainable lifestyle – is nearing completion.
Located 15km from the capital of Doha, Lusail City will be home to 250,000 people. Part of Qatar’s ‘Vision 2030’ to transform the country into a beacon of sustainable development, it will also be the destination for Qatar’s flagship 2022 world cup stadium.
Designed from the ground up, the city will be controlled by the Lusail Control and Command Centre, which is hooked up to the multitude of sensors, energy and transport networks that will make it tick.
Started in 2009 and due to be completed next year, the urban centre will have one of the world’s largest central cooling systems, providing savings of 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. While a 24km waste pipe beneath the city will transport waste to state-of-the-art treatment and recycling plants on the outskirts of the city.
A light railway, along with underground pedestrian tunnels and water-taxi system are some of the integrated infrastructure systems being put in place to encourage the use of sustainable transport. Around 150 media poles will also be peppered around the city for people to get the latest news and information.
Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is one of the company’s working to build this city of the future. Its equipment is being used on site around the clock to clear room for foundations and underground tunnels.
“Volvo CE is just one in many of companies involved in this project,” said Shahir El Essawy, business director of the Middle East and Africa at Volvo CE. “It has been an honor to work alongside Essa Mohammed Ali Kaldari – CEO of Lusail Real Estate Development Company (LREDC) – and his team in building this iconic city.”
