Solar windows a step closer

Solar windows being developed in America could transform skyscrapers into clean power generators.

The company behind the innovation, SolarWindow Technologies, has pioneered a special coating which converts sunlight into electricity. We reported in May the firm’s windows had passed the test of being commercially fabricated and now it has announced plans to step up efforts to bring them to market.

SolarWindow, which received support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, says its windows can reduce electricity needs of buildings by 50%. And its deal with glass fabricator Triview Glass Industries to produce the windows at scale brings this game changing product

“Our first goal was to invent transparent liquid electricity-generating coatings for commercial use. Now, our goals are to turn those inventions into fabricated commercial products and bring those products to market in order to turn entire buildings into vertical power generators,” said John Conklin, President and CEO of SolarWindow Technologies.
