10 Years of Impact

Scotland at the European Innovation Summit

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Innovators Magazine in 2025, every month this year we will publish some of our milestone moments: the stories, podcasts, initiatives, projects and partners that have shaped our journey so far. Here’s one from 2017, when we co-hosted a St Andrew’s Day reception in the European Parliament. Hot on the heels of Alan Cumming inking the streets of New York tartan this past weekend during the annual Tartan Week celebrations, let’s start this new one by raising a glass to Scotland.

Innovators Magazine was a proud media partner of this year’s European Innovation Summit in Brussels organised by the Knowledge4Innovation (K4I) Forum in the European Parliament.

And on 30 November, Innovators Magazine and K4I led a St Andrew’s Day reception in the European Parliament as part of the closing ceremony programme. MEP, Lambert van Nistelrooij hosted the closing ceremony, while fellow MEP, Alyn Smith, did the honours for Scotland on St Andrew’s Day.

Europe’s politicians and business leaders heard all about Scotland’s plans to help grow Europe’s innovation economy, in the good company of the country’s national drink. With Strathclyde University also joining team Scotland in Brussels, showcasing its Images of Research gallery at the reception.

Of all the small nations of this earth, perhaps only the ancient Greeks surpass the Scots in their contribution to mankind.” Churchill.

“We are delighted that the Images of Research tour is making its international debut at the European Innovation Summit and we hope that it will provide delegates with an insight to the breadth of our research, its industrial and societal impact and to the creativity of our researchers,” said Professor Tim Bedford, Associate Principal for Research & Innovation at Strathclyde University.

“We look to Scotland for all our ideas of civilization,” Voltaire.

Event organisers K4I, in partnership with IncubatorEurope and Glowfly, also added a new startup initiative this year, the EU Top 50 Millennial Startup Competition. Innovators Magazine produced a special edition, in collaboration with K4I, featuring all 50, as well as an exclusive interview with ‘serial-explorer’, Bertrand Piccard. The Swiss innovator was one of the keynote speakers at the startup convention, held on 28 November in the European Parliament Hemicycle.
