Off-grid renewable power is turning the electricity on for isolated communities worldwide.
Indigenous communities in Australia are benefitting from a multi-million dollar government backed off-grid solar initiative being delivered through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). The $59 million Solar Energy Transformation Program (SETuP) is in the process of supplying around 10MW of power to communities across the country.
“This project provides opportunities for off-grid remote Indigenous communities to decrease their reliance on diesel fuel which is subject to price fluctuations and seasonal transport issues,” said Josh Frydenberg, Australia’s Minister for the Environment and Energy.
Off-grid and battery supported renewable power systems are reshaping the energy landscape, providing electricity to millions of households across Africa, and contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 – to deliver reliable and clean energy for all.
