The Finish city of Lahti has started its year as European Green Capital 2021. It is 12th city to hold the title, following in the footsteps of the pioneers like Stockholm, Hamburg, Oslo, and most recently, Lisbon.
Lahti’s success in reducing emissions, implementing air quality monitoring and regulations, along with its action plan to become carbon neutral by 2025, are among the reasons it now holds the prestigious title on the back of a unanimous decision. And is a deserved poster city for the historic European Green Deal.
“Lahti believes in a sustainable future that not only “calls for action”, but delivers,” said Virginijus Sinkevičius, EU Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries. “As more and more people move to our cities, finding new, creative solutions is imperative to a sustainable future. Lahti is focusing on its citizens by, investing in sustainable transport systems, working towards a waste-free circular economy and bringing more nature into their lives.”
