Is tech taking over your life?

Technology is transforming our world. It has the potential to solve our biggest challenges and, if used equitably, can help pave the way towards truly desirable futures for people and planet. There are downsides though, especially at an individual level, where devices are dictating how people live. For many, tech has simply taken over, with a mindless attachment to it providing a rather worrying substitute for connecting with loved ones, learning, exercising, or pursuing activities that could help people fulfil their potential.

It is a topic everyone has an opinion on and one Sini Ninkovic, my guest today on Inside Ideas, has written a book about.

“I think this book talks about technology as a very positive tool that comes with one downside, that it allows us to use it unconsciously,” he said about his new book: Untethered. “When Americans are asked how much time they think they spend unconsciously with their devices, it’s about 50% of their time. So if we are connected for 12 hours, that’s over six hours being spent unconsciously. If that was turned into action, into alignments with our ourselves, just imagine. One can become a millionaire in this country with a few years of six hours a day.”

He added: “There is a lot of wasted potential and that wasted potential can be used for a lot of good.”

Sini currently lives in San Francisco, where he wrote Untethered and where he helps clients overcome distractions, create healthy habits and achieve their dreams through positive relationships with their devices.

His background makes him suited to living with change, the type of change tech has made inevitable in all our lives. In 1992 Sini’s family fled the Former Yugoslavia and found refuge in Austria. Which is where he quickly learned the most important skill of his life: adapting to new circumstances. Since then, Sini has received an MBA from UC Berkeley and helped companies like BMW, Lucid Motors and Apple release new tech into the world.

In 2019, Sini left Apple as he realized that he needed to adapt once again… this time to a new reality, where digital technologies are creating distractions that are keeping us away from realizing our dreams. So I am delighted to have Sini on the show to find out how he thinks people can reconnect with these dreams.

Untethered: overcome distraction – build healthy digital habits- and reconnect with life, by Sini Ninkovic, is available this summer.
