Smartphones with foldable displays will be available in 2019 and make a significant impact on the market within five years, according to new research. Strategy Analyticsestimates that foldable devices will account for 12% of the flexible display market by 2022.
The Samsung Galaxy Youm prototype showcased at CES 2013 gave a preview of what was in the pipeline and now that journey is about to go one step further and into the hands of users worldwide.
“Foldable smartphones with flexible/bendable displays have long been predicted, but never appear quite ready for market. After many years of rumour and speculation, this month a principal engineer from Samsung Display has shed some light on the timing of such devices. The new schedule points to the 2019 as being the year when the technology is mature enough for the first device to be unveiled,” Ville-Petteri Ukonaho revealed in a Strategy Analytics blog.
He added: “The wait will be totally worth it as the devices will combine the functionalities of tablet and smartphone and will truly change how all of us see mobile devices.”
