Finland to become ‘world’s first fossil-free society’

The Finnish Parliament this month made becoming carbon neutral by 2035 and carbon negative by 2035 a legally binding target.

And for Finland, the historic move addresses both environmental and security issues.

“The Climate Change Act is a strong signal to companies that in this country clean solutions are worth investing in,” said Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Emma Kari. “The faster we phase out our dependency on fossil resources, the better for the climate and for the security of Finland and Europe as a whole.”

The indigenous Sámi are also integral to the Act, as a Sámi Climate Council will be established to help shape climate policy.

The Act will enter into force on 1 July 2022.
