The Government of Chile has said it won’t now host COP25 this December. Discussions are currently underway to explore alternative solutions.
“Earlier today, I was informed of the decision by the Government of Chile not to host COP25 in view of the difficult situation that the country is undergoing. We are currently exploring alternative hosting options,” said UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa
The backdrop to the Chile decision is the violent unrest that has been taking place in the country in recent weeks. Citizens have been protesting on the streets against the climate of social injustice engulfing the country, where 1% of Chile’s population walk away with a third of its wealth.
