Young innovators are responding to world’s biggest climate challenge

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Innovators Magazine in 2025, every month this year we will publish some of our milestone moments: the stories, podcasts, initiatives, projects and partnerships that have shaped our journey so far. Here’s an announcement about our efforts to bring Climathon to Glasgow for the first time.

Cities around the globe will be taking the Climathon challenge on 27 October to brainstorm solutions to the climate crisis. The world’s biggest ever climate action hackathon, run by Climate KIC, starts in 11 days and there is still time to sign up.

Glasgow makes history

Innovators Magazine has secured the first-ever Glasgow Climathon after successfully pitching Scotland’s largest city as the perfect place to hold one. The goal now is to build a ‘Team Glasgow’ approach to creating the city’s very first Climathon.

So the magazine is collaborating with Glasgow City Council’s Sustainable Glasgow team and the City of Glasgow College on developing the Glasgow Climathon programme; with other supporters including the Glasgow School of Art; Sustainable Strathclyde, University of Glasgow and GUEST student sustainability team; the GGC awardsScotland’s 2050 Climate Group and Climate-ready Clyde.

“Innovators Magazine is delighted to be developing the first Glasgow City Climathon. We’re enjoying collaborating with our partners across all sectors of the city, and connecting with others across the world to bring forward new ideas for bold and meaningful change for our city and our planet. We can’t wait to see what Glasgow comes up with,” said Susan Robertson, Co-founder, Innovators Magazine.

The City of Glasgow College will host Glasgow’s hackathon on 27 October, and everyone is invited: innovators, entrepreneurs, students, startups, professionals, senior citizens… everyone. And don’t worry about turning up with ideas – there will be plenty of team working exercises to help brainstorm the next biggie.

Those taking part in the ‘Glasgow Challenge’ will be looking at ways to phase out fossil fuel transportation in the city by 2032, and ideas for developing low carbon solutions for improving air quality; reducing fuel poverty; eliminating health inequalities; and promoting sustainable economic growth.

In Climathon’s second year in 2016, there were 2330 new ideas generated by 59 cities, across six continents. This time, Glasgow – a global capital of innovation, is more than ready to share its vision for the future.

“Climate Change and the challenges it brings will affect everyone and will require a range of interventions to be implemented if we are to successfully overcome the single largest challenge facing humankind. Meaning everyone, by default, is a stakeholder and there is no single solution. Glasgow’s inaugural Climathon Climate Challenge Event offers an opportunity for all stakeholders to work collaboratively to develop solutions that both mitigate Glasgow’s impact on local and international climate, and adapt to the impacts a changing climate will have on the city,” added Duncan Booker, Sustainable Glasgow Manager & Chief Resilience Officer, Glasgow City Council.

Glasgow’s Climathon will be held from 8am to 8pm on 27 October in the Innovation & Enterprise Suite, City of Glasgow College, 190 Cathedral St, Glasgow G4 0RF. It’s free of charge to get involved, you don’t need to have an idea in advance, you just need to register online.
