Top award for vegan tuna

A tomato-based vegan alternative to raw tuna has been recognised as an ‘Outstanding Innovation’ by an American supermarket chain.

The ahimi product from Ocean Hugger Foods – which has previously featured on these pages – won the award at the Whole Foods Market Supplier Awards. Renowned US chef, James Corwell, developed the product, as he wanted to find a solution to the depleted numbers of fish swimming in the oceans.

“These national and local suppliers were selected from thousands of driven, passionate, mission-based brands at Whole Foods Market and represent the best in class in sourcing, and commitment to the highest quality standards,” said A.C. Gallo, president and chief operating officer at Whole Foods Market.

Ocean Hugger Foods is one of the growing number of pioneers transforming the food industry, as part of the rapidly growing plant-based food trend. One that Bruce Friedrich, Executive Director, The Good Food Institute, told us offers huge opportunities for innovators who want to make money and save the world.
