Lessons from A Child in Berlin

I spoke to the author of ‘A Child in Berlin’, Rhonda Lauritzen, and the child – now a grandmother – who the book is about, Heidi Posnien. The books is Heidi’s real-life story in Germany during World War Two when, as a 10-year-old, she had to survive alone in her Berlin apartment and protect it until her mum came home. This book is the wars years for Heidi before and after the time she had to protect her home alone.

Heidi shows a truly superhuman spirit and determination to survive the darkest days of World War 2, refusing to be drowned in the rubble raining all around her, thanks to an inspiring mix of human resilience and that unique kindness young people have. Everyone should read this book, it is the greatest example of how a growth mindset, something I’m learning about in school, can conquer all. Go get this book, it has so much to teach people my age – and all ages.
