A leading cross-channel European train service has pledged to find alternatives to fossil fuel energy.
Eurostar, which links London with the rest of Europe, launched its Tread Lightly initiative this month; a 10-point plan to align with the 2030 sustainability goals. Within the plan, Eurostar is committed to introducing ‘alternatives to fossil fuel energy for all train journeys across [its] markets by 2030’; and installing ‘banks of solar panels’ at its UK depot.
“Over the last eight years we have reduced our carbon footprint by over 30% but given the scale of the challenge facing the environment, we are now setting stretching new targets. High speed rail plays a pivotal role in encouraging the switch to more sustainable modes of transport and we are committed to increasing our energy efficiency and reducing our waste across the business,” said Nicolas Petrovic, Chief Executive of Eurostar.
