Audi plans to use solar energy to increase the range of its electric vehicles.
The carmaker has inked a deal with Alta Devices, a subsidiary of Hanergy Thin Film Power, a leading ‘thin-film solar technology enterprise’. The pair will work together to integrate solar cells into the glass roofs, with the first prototype due to be showcased later this year’
“Together with Alta Devices and Hanergy, we plan to install innovative solar technology in our electric cars that will extend their range and it is also sustainable,” explained Audi Board of Management Member for Procurement, Dr Bernd Martens.
Alta’s ultra-thin and flexible technology means it can be used to cover the entire roof with solar cells.
“By combining Alta’s continuing breakthroughs in solar technology with Audi’s drive toward the future of the auto industry, we will define the solar car of the future,” added Dr Jian Ding, SVP of Hanergy Thin Film Power, and CEO of Alta Devices.
