The word bureaucracy might not be classic semantic priming for creativity – but meanings change, and the Creative Bureaucracy Festival next month in Berlin promises to live up to its name.
The 9th edition of the Festival will welcome a novel mix of more than 2,000 changemakers: politicians, technologists, civil servants, institutional disruptors and activists, who will descend on the German capital to curate and experience a living lab of ideas and innovations that are transforming the lives of citizens worldwide.
On 11 June, these innovators – from over 50 countries, will engage in debate and experimentation around the future-building projects and activities delivering impact across communities today.
At a time when leaders are seen less and less as dealers in hope, the Festival can act as a correction, not only to the prevailing narrative of despair, but to the direction of travel.
Through a diverse programme designed to inspire new belief in how the future is perceived, visitors will see the positive impact made on lives when the creative tools of bureaucracy are put to work for the people they are meant to serve.
“The festival will showcase the people behind more than 100 projects for future-ready public administrations — across four stages, ten demo stations and five interactive workshop spaces covering topics such as artificial intelligence, defence, civic participation, efficiency and migration,” a Festival press release states.
These projects span everything from AI-powered government innovations, apps connecting disadvantaged youth with local government, collaborative governance platforms in Uruguay, to the Japanese technologies tackling century-defining demographic pressures.
The message is clear: government innovation isn’t just a nice soundbite, it is the paradigm shift that can become society’s greatest engine for transformation.
