Log on to the future of learning

EdTech startup MyGermanUniversity has seen interest in online English-language programs listed on its platform skyrocket amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Hamburg-based startup attracted a six-figure investment in recent months for its pioneering system, which connects international students with English-language courses run by German universities.

“The demand for online study programs at MyGermanUniversity has risen by 210% in recent weeks,” said co-founder, Tobias Bargmann.

The Leuphana University of Lüneburg, and the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, are among institutions in the country offering a breadth of online options – and the startup expects others to follow.

“So far, only 1.8% of English-language masters in Germany are available online,” says Stephan Paulini, fellow co-founder, responsible for data and research. “Why, for example, the FernUniversität in Hagen, Germany’s largest university with over 75,000 students, continues to offer only German-language courses is hard to understand.”

While online education is clearly filling a gap caused by the pandemic it is likely to remain a popular choice beyond it. And if more online courses are created – and sustained – we could be in the early days of a new era of learning.
