How to remember what matters

We increasingly capture ideas, images and information so we won’t forget them. New research suggests that the act of saving something can sometimes have the opposite effect — raising a bigger question about how we retain knowledge in an age of unlimited digital storage.
Take a screenshot. Save a photo. Bookmark the page. Add it to your notes.
It feels like a sensible way to make sure something stays with us.
But what if the act of saving information is sometimes making it less likely that we will remember it?
Recent research from Binghamton University suggests that taking photographs and screenshots can impair memory for the information being captured — particularly when we never return to the images afterwards.
The finding adds a twist to a familiar feature of digital life. We have become extraordinarily good at capturing information. Our phones can store thousands of photographs, screenshots, links and notes.
But capturing something and remembering it are not the same thing.
The screenshot effect
The phenomenon is known as the photo-taking impairment effect.
Researchers have previously found that photographing something can reduce subsequent memory for it. The Binghamton team wanted to investigate whether the same effect applied to screenshots and to understand why it might happen.
In a series of seven experiments, participants captured images of artwork and were later tested on their memory. Some experiments also used mathematical problems to examine whether taking a screenshot diverted cognitive resources.
The researchers found no clear memory benefit from capturing the information. Instead, the captured material was generally remembered less well.
The effect appears particularly relevant when the images are simply stored and forgotten.
“If you are actively reviewing those images as cues for elaborative memory retrieval,” explains lead researcher Sophia Fabrizio, “it may benefit you.” But simply accumulating photographs or screenshots does not necessarily strengthen memory.
That distinction is increasingly important.
The average smartphone contains thousands of photographs, while many people take dozens more each day. The ability to save something has become almost frictionless.
Reviewing it is another matter.
When saving becomes forgetting
The researchers considered several possible explanations for the effect.
One is divided attention. Taking a photograph or screenshot requires us to perform another task at the moment we are supposed to be encoding an experience in memory.
But the researchers found that this alone probably doesn’t explain the results.
Another possibility is cognitive offloading: if we believe information has been stored somewhere else, we may devote fewer mental resources to remembering it ourselves.
This is useful when the external record is reliable and accessible. We don’t need to memorise every phone number when our contacts list can do it for us.
But the research suggests something more complicated may be happening with photographs and screenshots.
Participants’ memory could remain impaired even when they knew the images would be deleted immediately. In some experiments, people were also less likely to remember whether they had captured an image or simply viewed it.
That points towards a third possibility: attentional disengagement.
The act of capturing something may subtly change our relationship with the experience itself, causing us to step back from it rather than fully engage with it.
As Fabrizio puts it, the effect may extend beyond what is actually captured to the broader context of an experience.
The value of making information harder
There is a useful counterpoint to all this convenience.
Writing something down by hand can require more mental processing. Rather than simply storing information externally, we have to interpret it, organise it and decide what matters.
Researchers refer to this kind of productive effort as desirable difficulty.
It doesn’t mean that handwriting is automatically better than digital tools. Writing things down can also become a form of cognitive offloading — just as adding someone’s birthday to a calendar can mean we no longer need to remember it ourselves.
The difference is what we do with the information.
A screenshot that disappears into a camera roll may do little for memory.
A deliberately captured image that we return to, annotate, connect to other ideas and use may be much more valuable.
The problem with saving everything
This is where the research becomes particularly relevant beyond memory science.
For innovators, the challenge is rarely a shortage of information.
It is the opposite.
Ideas arrive through meetings, emails, reports, research papers, podcasts, social media, AI tools and conversations. We save articles for later, screenshot useful passages and accumulate notes about things we intend to revisit.
Digital technology has made collection almost effortless.
But innovation depends on something else: being able to retrieve information, connect it to other information and recognise when it might be useful.
The research suggests that there may be a difference between building an archive and building knowledge.
The former is increasingly easy.
The latter still requires attention.
Capture less. Engage more.
The researchers are not arguing that people should stop taking photographs or screenshots.
Used intentionally, digital capture can support memory. The problem comes when saving becomes a substitute for paying attention — or when thousands of captured fragments accumulate without ever being revisited.
That suggests a simple question worth asking the next time we reach for the screenshot button:
Do I want to save this, or do I want to remember it?
Sometimes the answer will be both.
But they may require different behaviours.
In an age when almost anything can be stored indefinitely, the scarce resource may no longer be information.
It may be attention — and our ability to decide what deserves to stay with us.
