The UK government has announced it will legislate to ‘eradicate its net contribution to climate change by 2050’.
Outgoing PM, Theresa May, said “reaching net zero by 2050 is an ambitious target, but it is crucial that we achieve it to ensure we protect our planet for future generations”. The legal underpinning of this target will be introduced to the UK Parliament today, and amends the Climate Change Act 2008.
Welcoming the news, Juliet Davenport, CEO and Founder, Good Energy, said: “This historic move puts the UK on track to become a world leader in fighting the climate emergency. Creating a sustainable and low-carbon economy has enormous benefits to our society, environment and quality of life. It is now the job of business to invest and innovate in low-carbon technologies to rapidly bring about this cleaner future.”
