World Oceans Day took place on Thursday and shone a spotlight on the devastation being caused by plastic waste.
And with one report finding – on current trajectory – that “by 2050 oceans could contain more plastics than fish (by weight)” it was timely that 8 June 2017 proved to be the biggest World Oceans Day yet.
To build on the energy generated, people are being urged to engage and share their ongoing efforts to make a difference.
In a bid to keep plastics out of the ocean the Ellen MacArthur Foundation recently launched a $2 million innovation competition.
And some are already talking a lead, including waste and water management company SUEZ, who marked World Oceans Day by launching a global clean up operation that will see its 84,000 employees coordinate efforts to remove plastic waste from coastlines around the world.
