Sustainability is highly fashionable

(GERMANY)

The fashion industry is taking steps to become more sustainable by adopting circular principles that can mitigate its carbon footprint.

A side event at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP23) in Bonn, acknowledges stakeholders must work together to reshape the fashion industry for the good of the planet.

Ditching the take, make, dispose – linear system – could cut the greenhouse gas emissions from ‘selected key sectors’ by ‘13% and 66%’, according to Deloitte. And the world of fashion is taking note, which is vital, as in America alone, 85% of apparel ends up in landfill.

Famous designers, like Stella McCartney, are showing the way, by using sustainable materials and practices that harness closed loop manufacturing processes. While retailers, such as H&M, have committed to becoming 100% circular by 2030.
