Space solutions out of this world

“Space is supporting or enabling a number of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – and there are proposals for having space as the 18th SDG.”

The words of Torsten Kriening, publisher of the fiercely independent, Switzerland-based digital magazine, SpaceWatch.Global, and my guest today on Inside Ideas.

“Space excites people – space innovation, it puts a smile on your face,” he says. “So many of the innovations we made for space we use day in day out on Earth, from heart monitoring technology to tinned food.”

Torsten’s passion for space technology and his understanding of the role it plays, and will play, in moving people and planet to the next frontier: to a sustainable future, comes through powerfully in the magazine and his Space Café WebTalk podcast.

“We have no paywall and make ourselves SDG4 compliant,” he said.

So when users read or listen they are not connecting with a publication pushing one narrative, one technology, company or country. Being completely independent, it is committed to presenting a range of views and sources that people can engage with to make up their own minds on the big space questions.

For anyone interested in space, which is pretty much everyone, Torsten’s Space Café WebTalk, launched last year, is a great place to find out more. It is a weekly podcast, pitched as: 33 minutes with… where high level actors in the space community take part in in-depth talks. Torsten also produces the bi-weekly Space Café Podcast hosted by Markus Mooslechner.

Our mission here on Spaceship Earth to reach desirable futures for all will undoubtedly be made easier by what we continue to learn from our interactions with space. So I am delighted to have Torsten join me aboard today to find out how we shift into warp speed, navigate the space junk, and get to where we want to go.
