Silk coating doubles lifespan of food

(USA)

A company that uses an edible food coating to double the shelf life of fruits and vegetables has won a leading innovation prize.

Cambridge Crops, who use a silk-based coating to increase the lifespan of these essential foods by up to 50%, picked up top spot and $12,000 at the RabobankMIT Food & Agribusiness Innovation Prize.

“Thanks to the generous support from Rabobank, we were able to attend the F&A Next conference (a two-day innovation event in Holland) to present Cambridge Crops’ edible food coating to a broad audience of investors and potential commercial partners, which will help take our innovation to the next level,” said Livio Valenti, from Cambridge Crops.
