Plastic option that’s carbon neutral

As global use of plastic skyrockets, alternative solutions with strong environmental credentials are in high demand.

Step forward Woodly Oy, the Finnish company making a carbon neutral plastic substitute with ‘cellulose that comes from sustainably managed and FSC certified forests’. Its recyclable packaging material – also called Woodly – is a wood-based plastic the company says is winning admirers worldwide. Woodly Oy is working on a ‘product family’ with the support of partners Wipak Group and Amerplast Ltd, both plastic packaging firms.

“Even though more and more people are talking about the problems of plastic, it has been estimated that the demand for plastic is going to quadruple by 2050. We cannot solve the problems caused by plastics by wishing that people will reduce its consumption. Instead, we can offer an alternative, which makes it possible for the consumption to be more reasonable and environmentally friendly,” said Jaakko Kaminen, CEO, Woodly.
