Online events and platforms are replacing conference venues as spaces where innovation and collaboration are being given a space to thrive. While the days of summits and exhibitions will return – to some extent, the switch online is likely to gather pace post-pandemic, as the world calculates the potential health and climate costs of such gatherings.

It looks like lockdown is delivering a new era of communication faster than expected. So as well as tracking online challenges relating to COVID-19 in recent months, we have also been posting about online events readers might be interested in. This month’s free online Coimbra Sustainability Summit is one of those events. Led by the Diatomic project, supported by the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, it will explore a range of topics, including health, agri-food and sustainable cities. The bumper two-week summit will focus on impacts relating to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and opportunities for growth between four key ‘areas of digitalization’ – Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Internet of Things and Cybersecurity (4 KETs).

The Coimbra Sustainability Summit is on from 18 to 29 May – registration is free.
