Island communities are far more than the sum of their parts and a new initiative – backed by the Clinton Foundation – is seeking to further strengthen the bonds and working relationships that exist between them.
Inspiring women to become Island leaders, the Women SDG Award, is among 12 titles up for grabs in the inaugural Island Innovation Awards – led by Island Innovation. It will recognise women in leadership roles making an impact in progressing one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
For the organisers, it is the knowledge sharing, the ‘how’ of these stories, that is the most important aspect: communicating practices which other communities can benefit from.
There are project awards, including the Resilient Island Award; and Sustainable Energy Initiative of the Year Award; as well as individual gongs, like the Island Innovator Award; and organisation awards, such as the Innovative Island Research Award. Each will showcase ‘innovations and outstanding leaders from islands worldwide’, many of which are on the frontline of climate change, in the process generating a bank of solutions they can all pull from.
