IBM has received the most patents in America year-on-year for the past quarter of a century.

That was confirmed with the 9,403 patents its international team of scientists, engineers and designers were awarded in 2017. It was the 25th year IBM recorded more than anyone else and it saw the company pass the 100,000-patent milestone.

“For the past 25 years, IBM’s patent leadership has changed the way the world works with advancements critical to the modern era of computing. Today, nearly half of our patents are pioneering advancements in AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, blockchain and quantum computing – and all are aimed at helping our clients create smarter businesses,” said said Ginni Rometty, IBM chairman, president and CEO.
