Fishing plans target sustainability

(MALTA)

The Our Ocean, An Ocean for Life conference concluded in Malta today with a raft of commitments made to support a sustainable fishing industry.

World leaders gathered in the small European country over the past two days have been discussing the various challenges facing oceans. Governments and international organisations made a number of pledges specifically designed to safeguard the future of fish stocks and the people who make a living from it.

Norway, for example, ‘announced its backing for a project – from the Food & Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO) – to ‘enhance awareness of governments and other stakeholders at global, regional and national level on the contribution of small-scale fisheries to food security and poverty reduction’.

The list of actions agreed to is a long and detailed one. To find out more about the high level plans to save the oceans – click here.
