Millions of people in towns and cities across 44 European countries are getting from A to B this week as sustainably as they can as part of European Mobility Week.
The European Commission’s flagship annual awareness-raising campaign on sustainable urban mobility is this year focussed on the theme of ‘shared public space’, asking the public to work together to ‘decide how to share our public space, and make sure everyone can move around safely and comfortably in a pleasant environment, especially pedestrians and cyclists’.
Commissioner for Climate Action and responsible for Transport, Wopke Hoekstra, said: “Europe’s urban population is rising, and with it our need to move around in a safe and sustainable way. The European Mobility Week, across over 2500 cities in 44 countries, is an opportunity to engage with people and businesses, city planners and politicians to help improve the way we all benefit from the public spaces in our cities. Events across Europe will promote safer school streets, better and more welcoming public places, adequate parking for alternative modes of transports and much more. Let’s continue to lead by example and – for all of us who can – choose those transport modes that can not only improve urban air quality, but also contribute to making our cities more enjoyable to live in.”
One of the initiatives, in Mannheim, Germany, is data walks, led by mobility data experts, from Central Station to Paradeplatz, which shows how ‘mobility data can support sustainable and climate-friendly mobility’.
