Launched by the European Commission, the prize is open to cities with a minimum population of 50,000, and there are six prizes up for grabs across two categories: the European Capital of Innovation and the Rising Innovative City.
“European Capital of Innovation Awards celebrate cities that use innovation to reshape the urban landscape, tackle demographic and economic challenges and put citizens at the heart of their decision-making processes,” said Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. “Through spotlighting shining examples of creating a better future for people through innovation, the awards are a beacon for the green and digital transition in Europe. This will be the 10th edition of the awards, and I encourage all eligible cities to apply.”
The winner of the 2024 European Capital of Innovation title will walk away with €1 million, with the first two runners-up getting €100k each. In the Rising Innovative City category, top spot is worth €500k, with €50k each going to the two runners up.
