EU cities fly the flag for innovation

The winner of this year’s €1 million European Capital of Innovation title will be announced at next week’s European Innovation Council (EIC) Summit in Brussels.

Dublin, Dortmund, Vilnius, and Malaga are competing for the award; with Cascais, Trondheim, and Vantaa vying to be named the first-ever European Rising Innovative City, and the winner of €500k.

“The finalist cities test new innovative concepts on a large scale and join the group of pioneering cities that actively push boundaries of urban innovation,” said Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. “These cities can be  an inspiration for others to make the community of innovative cities grow.”

The awards are backed by the European Innovation Council under Horizon Europe, and the 2021 winners will be revealed at the EIC Summit – which will be available to watch online – on 24 November.
