Robots will be used to deliver mail to customers in Switzerland next month as part of a new trial by Swiss Post.

The robots will travel at walking pace and make same day or same hour deliveries of things such as groceries and medicine. And they will be trialled in a variety of locations to test their suitability in different environments.

The Starship delivery robots being employed by Swiss Post use the latest technology to navigate: a combination of geolocation signals (e.g. GPS) and visual recognition of the environment using multiple cameras.

Swiss Post says it envisages the commercial roll out of the service in three years time, if the test proves successful.
