Culture and creativity now part of Europe’s largest innovation network

Europe’s cultural and creative sectors are being plugged into the continents dynamic innovation community led by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).

EIT Culture & Creativity will be the ninth community to join Europe’s largest innovation network, with €300 million of funding earmarked to transform Europe’s Cultural and Creative Sectors and Industries (CCSI).

“Culture is not only our common language, it also an innovating ecosystem,” says Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. “The new EIT Culture & Creativity Innovation Community will capitalise on the unique richness of European diversity to guarantee that creatives are ingrained in the pan-European Innovation Ecosystem. I look forward to observing the growth of this sector’s innovators and start-ups under EIT’s innovative approach, which has had a significant impact on the lives of Europeans over the previous decade.”

The new EIT Culture & Creativity community is being shaped by ICE: Innovation by Creative Economy, a collaborative group of 50 partners from 20 countries, including Philips Design, Tartu University, and the European Broadcasting Union, who were chosen to take forward its vision after responding to EIT’s Call for Proposals in October last year.

A spokesperson for the winning team said: “We can’t wait to start work and to lay the foundation for our vision. We have bold and brave ideas for the role of innovation in these sectors and industries and we are very much looking forward to uniting creatives with Europe’s largest innovation ecosystem.”
