Costa Rica breaks clean energy record

A record-breaking 99% of Costa Rica’s electricity came from renewable sources in the first half of 2017, according to new statistics.

With a goal of becoming the world’s first carbon neutral country – by 2021 – these latest figures, from the National Energy Control Center (CENCE), show it is heading swiftly in the right direction.

Costa Rica harnesses power from solar, hydroelectric, wind and geothermal projects, which have provided 93% of its electricity over the past three decades. The CENCE numbers show they have now smashed this record.
