BMW buzzed by drone racing league

Drone tech has made a number of headlines on these pages: for saving lives, supporting humanitarian efforts, spotting killer sharks, even as a replacement for wind turbines.

But it’s Friday, so let’s look at its impact on entertainment.

They are increasingly being used at major sporting events to wow the crowds, and through the Drone Racing League (DRL), as a brand new event to take part in and watch.

BMW announced this week it is joining forces with the DRL to pioneer faster and more efficient racing drones. Not only will the BMW Group wind tunnel be used to test new racing tech, the car giant also wants to bring a race to its BMW Welt facility.

“The partnership with DRL will enhance BMW’s racing involvement with future-oriented formats. Drone racing is a very competitive type of racing, characterised by the interplay of extremely high-performance material and digital technology. This represents an environment in which BMW has assumed a pioneering position for many years in its core business. We are very much looking forward to this collaboration and to the new event formats that we will be developing together with our partners,” said Jörg Reimann, Head of BMW International Brand Experience.
