New figures released by the Australian Photovoltaic Institute (APVI) reveal the country exceeded 6 gigawatts of solar capacity for the first time at the end of March. That would be enough to power the city of Melbourne, population 1.3 million.
It is up from 4GW in December 2014 and is predicted to top 7GW within 12 months, as a number of large solar projects come online.
“Solar power now makes up 11% of our country’s total electricity generation capacity with more solar added to the system in 2016 than any other fuel type,” APVI chair Renate Egan said in a statement.
