“Let us embrace this moment as a tipping point for climate action – in America and around the world” Al Gore says of the $370 billion of “transformative climate legislation” that has be green lighted by US senators.
Part of the Inflation Reduction Act the package of clean energy and climate investments has, Gore says, “been a long time coming”. It includes funding, loans and tax breaks that will encourage actions including the the adoption of clean energy technologies, innovations like carbon capture technologies and climate friendly agriculture.
America’s Vice President Kamala Harris said: “We will make the largest investment in our nation’s history to address the climate crisis, creating good-paying, union jobs in wind, solar, and electric vehicle manufacturing. We will lower energy bills for working families and support environmental justice.”
The USA has already committed to cutting its emissions in half by 2030 from its 2005 levels and this latest move should hopefully inspire other countries to rethink their climate investment plans ahead of this year’s COP27 in Egypt.
Gore added: “The great American poet Wallace Stevens wrote: “After the final no there comes a yes. And on that yes the future world depends.” Today, the US finally said yes to climate action.”
